Whitebait season ‘mediocre’

Greymouth reporter The whitebait season on the West Coast will end on Thursday, and has been described as mediocre by the senior fisheries officer at Greymouth, Mr Ron Lundy. There had been an occasional good catch, “but catches on the Grey and Buller rivers have been less than average,” he said. In the last three days, the weather and tides were suitable for whitebaiting, but many have forsaken the riverbanks. A Greymouth man said yesterday that he walked along the Grey riverbank on Sunday, saw whitebait shoals of a kilogram or more close to the bank, but not a whitebaiter or net in sight.
