Fulton unavailable for Canty

Rod Fulton, who captained Canterbury in its Shell.series cricket matches last year is not available to fill the position again this season. Fulton informed the convener of the Canterbury selection panel, Mr Brian Salt last evening, that he would not be available because of commitments on his North Canterbury farm which have prevented him from getting vital match preparation.

Fulton has played only one game this season. “Rod felt that he couldn’t do himself justice,” said Mr Salt. “We (the selection panel) will have to sit down next week-end and discuss the captaincy, and pick a squad for the Shell series as well.” Selecting the squad will throw up more problems for the selectors. They will not know until probably mid-December whether players such .as

Vaughan Brown and Paul McEwan will be needed for the one-day three-way series in Australia between the host, New Zealand and India. Meanwhile David Stead, the experienced Riccarton all-rounder, will captain, the Town representative cricket team against Country in a two-day match next Saturday and Sunday at Ohoka. Having been unavailable for representative cricket for much of last summer,

Stead is one of two newcomers from the squad of players who represented Canterbury in 1984-85. The other is the former Auckland fast bowler, Sean Tracy, who has moved south, and joined High School Old Boys. Eight of the nine clubs in the Trusteebank senior competition have players included in the team. The team for the two-day match is: Ray Jones, Anup

Nathu, Paul McEwan, Rod Latham, David Boyle, David Stead (captain), Ash Hart, Gary MacDonald, Craig Thiele, Sean Tracy and Steve Bateman. The Country team has also been named. It is: Michael Johnston (captain), Paul Winter, Dennis Mably, Geoff Spicer, John Davies, Barry Ward, Steve McNally, John Richardson, Gary Saunders, Warren Eddington, Chris Abbott and Michael Satterthwaite.
