Massed pipe bands

Sixty-four pipers and drummers will give the Canterbury show a Scottish flavour on Thursday evening. The musicians, from four pipe bands in Christchurch, will combine in a display in the main ring. Highland dancers will perform during part of the programme. The pipers and drummers will come from the Canterbury Caledonian Society’s pipe band, the Caledonian Ladies’ band, the Christchurch Metropolitan pipe band, and the Christchurch Metropolitan Ladies’ band.

Music will include “100 Pipers,” “Cock of the North,” “Marquis of Huntly,” “Scotland the Brave,” and “Mhairi’s Wedding.” The drum majors and pipe majors of the four

bands are:— Caledonian: George Hockam (D.M.), Richard Hawke (P.M.); Caledonian Ladies: Mrs Carron Outram (D.M.), Mrs Noelen Keller (P.M.); Christchurch Metropolitan: Jock McQuarrie (D.M.), Donald Gannaway (P.M.); Metropolitan Ladies: Mrs Jill Vincent (D.M.), Miss June Wilson (P.M.). Christchurch has 10 pipe

bands and there are about 20 in the Marlborough, Nelson, North Canterbury and West Coast Centre of the Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Association. The St Andrew’s College Pipe Band will lead the cattle parade on Thursday and the band of the Highland Scottish Society of New Zealand will be' in the Grand Parade.
