Meat and Wool Cup to best beef animal
The highlight of the cattle judging on the first day of the Canterbury A. and P. show will be the Meat and Wool Cup, awarded to the best purebred beef animal. A big Angus bull, Valiant of the Downs, took top honours last year, giving the Angus breed the cup for the second time in three year. Previously, Herefords had dominated the competition,
winning the cup for' 14 successive years until 1982. Valiant of the Downs was bred by Wayne and Greg Chisnail of Hawarden, and has been entered in this year’s show. It had been runner-up in the 1963 Meat and Wool Cup as a two-year-old. All-breeds competition is getting tougher each year and exotic cattle breeds are pushing the traditional
types hard. A Charolais cow was second in the cup last year and a Simmental bull third. The winner of this year's Royal Meat and Wool Cup at the recent Hamilton show, a Charolais bull bred by Mr Bruce Fisher, Greenpark, will be competing at Canterbury and is likely to attract keen interest. from judges if it qualifies for the all-breeds competition. The Meat and Wool Cup gets its name from a journal published by Philip Hereford, senior, and Sons. It was first competed for at Canterbury in 1954. The cup will be decided in the main ring at 2.15 p.m. tomorrow. Judges from each beef breed will nominate one animal to take part in the cup contest and
they will parade in the ring where each judge will rank them in order of merit. The animal with the best combined total of points will be the cup winner. A welcome addition to the all-breeds beef cattle classes this year is the junior championship for bulls and females. The Skellerup all-breeds dairy competitions are the dairy cattle’s equivalent to beef’s Meat and Wool Cup, and will be judged in the main ring on Thursday morning. There are classes for cows three years old and over, heifers and yearling heifers. A feature of the dairy section will be the market milk cow contest judged on butterfat and milk production.
