Dunedin band wins honours
PA . Wellington A . Dunedin band, Netherworld Dancing Toys, topped industry and public popularity stakes by taking four of the major honours at last evening’s New Zealand Music Awards in Wellington. The band won three Recording Industry Association titles — single, album, and top group of the year — as well as the only category decided by public vote, the United Song of the Year with the single, “For Today,” by Malcolm Black and Nick Sampson. The N.D.T. producer, Nigel Stone, was named producer of the year for his work on “For Today.” The Mockers’ frontman, Andrew Fagan, won the top male vocalist category. The
top female vocalist for. 1985 was Margaret Urlich.
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was voted New Zealand’s top international performer for 1985.
Herbs’ album, “Long Ago,” won the Polynesian title; the jazz record prize was awarded to Jacqui Fitzgerald’s “The Masquerade is Over”; and Patsy Rigger’s “You Remind Me of a Lovesong” won the country record title.
The judges voted Satellite Spies, Mark Loveys, and Debbie Harwood most promising group, male and female vocalist respectively. Graham Myhre’s work on “Lift Your Head Up High” earned him the industry’s top prize for sound engineering. . v
A Wellington artist, Debra Bustin, was awarded the sleeve design award for her artwork on the Pelicans’ “Krazy Legs” album. Fane Flaws’ skill with “Diamonds on China” won the video prize. Almost 10,000 people voted during the last month for the 14 songs nominated for the song of the year. Other awards were: Clas-
sical record, “Brahms,” by Tamas Vesmas; folk record, “That’s No Way to Get Along,” by Alan Young; gospel record, “On This Night,” by Jules Riding, film soundtrack, “Should I Be Good, Should I Be Evil,” by Hammond Gamble and Beaver. Last evening’s show at the Michael Fowler Centre was attended by the Prime Minister, Mr Lange. Performers included Sneaky Feelings, Alan Young and Peking Man, as well as many of those groups which won titles.
