Burgess takes Canty street stock title

The running of the Canterbury Street Stock and A grade saloon championships produced some exciting racing at Woodford Glen Speedway on Saturday night. In the first heat of the street stocks, there were scrapes for the defending champion, Alan Parkhill, and the title favourite, Bob Burgess (Valiant). On the first lap Parkhill’s Valiant was shoved into the concrete wall. Burgess took the lead two laps later, but was tangled in a three-car pile-up, allowing Bill Oliver (Valiant) into the lead.

Once clear of the action, Burgess caught Oliver on the last lap to claim 22 points for the win, from Oliver (21), Hugo Hobby (20) and Terry Hall (19). The action-packed second heat produced an easy win for Burgess to lead with 44 points, with Hall once again fourth. Hobby limped in with a flat tyre for sixth place. Trevor Stevens (Charger) nearly caused an upset when he took out Parkhilf and then spun out Burgess in the third heat. Hall cleared out to win this one from Stevens but Burgess (fourth) and Hobby (ninth) both got across the line with flat tyres to score their points. Final points: Burgess 63,

Hall 60, Hobby 51, Rod Brunie 48 and Dave Bennett 46. Off the front mark, Timaru’s Neville Stowell scored an easy win in his new Valiant in the A grade saloon first heat, and in doing so set a new eight-lap record of 2:58.07. Mechanical problems forced Stowell to retire from the second heat, leaving Warren Boyle (Victor) to head home James Berryman (Rover V 8). The consistency of Ashburton’s Trevor Whiting (A9X Torana) with a second and a fifth, and a local driver, Graeme Martin (Capri V 8), third and fourth, gave them 35 points each. Berryman easily won the final heat while Whiting lost control in the North Bend to drop back to seventh place. Martin’s third placing was enough to give him the championship. Final points: Martin 53, Berryman 51, Boyle 50, Whiting 49 and Kevin Kerr 49. Joe Annan once again dominated the Sportsman class with another three wins and again lowered the eight-lap record, to 2:47.26, scorchng round for a lap time of 19.915.
