Farmers’ incomes

Sir,—Mr Rankin of the Planning Council has said that farmers should not blame the Government for their present economic plight. The Government is directly responsible. The Government is responsible for gross overspending which has caused high taxation and the large internal deficit, which in turn, have had a major effect on raising interest rates. These interest rates have dramatically strengthened the New Zealand dollar to an unrealistic level. Turn to the tender columns in this paper and see who is spending our money. It is the Government — central, local and quasi. I will not enlarge on the Government’s responsibility for maintaining tariffs, import licensing and protection afforded to labour and others. To quote Gerald Ford, former President of the United States: "Any Government that can do everything for its people, can also take everything away- from them.” This Government is taking everything away from the New Zealand fanner and must accept the responsibility for it.—Yours, etc., G. I. T. EVANS. November 8, 1985.
