Yacht Pastime
Sir,—The reprieve granted to the yacht Pastime may, I fear, be temporary. She is currently lying alongside a wharf at Lyttelton and the damage resulting from banging against this unforgiving lodging has injured her belting and topsides far more than anything else that has happened in her previous 99 years of use. No matter what energy and money is poured into restoring this graceful vessel, which represents so much of our maritime heritage, thoughtless berthage will certainly bring it to naught. Meantime, 30odd valuable and highly suitable moorings lie unused awaiting the arrival of a vessel that will never come. May I plead with officialdom to take effective action now, rather than defer to the engineers while they prepare yet another plan.—Yours, etc., KEITH DRAYTON. November 1, 1985.
