The Indian Prime Minister, Mr Rajiv Gandhi, watches as his wife, Sonia, places a garland on the site where his mother and political predecessor, Mrs Indira Gandhi, was shot a year ago. Mr Gandhi shrugged off threats by Sikh extremists
and walked early yesterday through New Delhi streets to the cremation site. He then'returned to Mrs Gandhi’s official residence where she was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered for a
memorial service, which was attended by many senior Indian politicians. Recent public opinion polls bave confirmed Mr Gandhi’s growing popularity as leader. Since taking office he has gained stature by his peace overtures to moderate Sikhs.
