Socceroos given win before match
The Australian propaganda machine has been very effective in promoting the Socceroos as the winners of the Oceania qualifying group — before it has been completed. Before last week’s match with Israel the Australians had one British soccer writer believing that Australia will play Scotland later this month for a place in next year’s World Cup finals in Mexico. That most venerable English paper, “The Times,” in an article last Friday, said that Scotland could be without some leading players “for their play-off match against Australia.” It seems Dundee United and St Mirren, two Scottish
clubs who supply four players to the Scotland squad, have third round ties in the U.E.FA. Cup on November 27, the day Scotland is due to fly out for Australia — or New Zealand. “The Times” is known for its fairness however, and the next day.it righted its wrong in a roundabout way, with a paragraph stating that the Rufer brothers had been given permission to play in “New Zealand’s vital game, against Israel in the Oceania qualifying group."
