New air service
Sir,—With most South Islanders, I welcome Air New Zealand’s decision to introduce services from Christchurch to North America and return. Its introduction follows after many years of suggestions from manufacturers, civic leaders and the travel and tourism industry, that our national carrier should recognise the considerable
potential of that route. It is most unfortunate that the airline’s officials have been quick to emphasise that we should “use it or lose it.” The inference is that success or otherwise is not in Air New Zealand’s hands, responsibility or interest. They should accept publicly that their own promotional efforts must be up to the task, that their operational standards hold high and their scheduling meets , market demand if the service-is to stay. Positive commitment is’ contagious, and Air New Zealand could prosper long term by taking on that attitude. — Yours, etc., G. N. ELLIS. October 31, 1985.
