NZPA-AFP Kathmandu Two American climbers and their Sherpa porter have died after being buried alive in an avalanche on the 7234-metre Mount Langtang Lining. Confirmation of the three deaths takes to 13 the number of people killed in the Nepalese Himalayas during the post-monsoon season, which will end in two weeks.
The dead men are the American expedition leader, Daniel Newel, aged 34, a computer software consultant, of Sacramento, California; Jan Elliott Spake, aged 27, a student, and Sherpa Gyalgen. They were swept away by an avalanche at an altitude of 4877 m on October 18, the Nepalese Tourism Ministry said.
