Stunning recovery
Elsie Williams (Linwood) produced a stunning finish to score a last-gasp victory in the final of the Christchurch Women’s Bowling Centre’s open singles championship at the Cashmere green yesterday.
Mrs Williams had trailed Mary Flewellen (Woolston W.M.C.) for most of the 21-
end final, being behind 5-1, 8-3, 12-6, 18-12, and 19-15 after 19 ends. On the twentieth end, Mrs Williams scored two which left her needing at least three on the last end. With the bowls running the way of Mrs Williams, Mrs Flewellen could only watch helplessly as Mrs
Williams picked up the three she needed to win, 2019. In the semi-finals, Mrs Williams beat her Linwood club-mate and last year’s runner-up, Denise Page, 1916, while Mrs Flewellen halted the advance of Enid Edyvean (Shirley) with a 1610 victory.
