Malvern XI wins
Malvern took a first innings win over Ellesmere and the bonus points to get off to a good start in the North Canterbury senior shield cricket competition. A damp wicket made conditions difficult for batsmen and kept scoring low. A total of 26 wickets fell throughout the day, only one of them as the result of being bowled, the rest were caught Ellesmere got off to a bad start, being all out with only 71 runs on the board. Wright and Chris Abbott tore the batting line-up apart. Malvern declared its innings closed at 106 for the loss of eight wickets. Ellesmere at the. close of play was 101 for the loss of eight wickets. Graeme Henderson took five very good catches to assist the Malvern cause. Ellesmere 71 (G. Johnson 26, M. Allan 20; S. Wright 4/25, C. Abbott 5/20) and 101/8 (C. Abbott 4/18) lost to Malvern 106/8 dec. (P. Winter 25, C. Abbott 24; M. Taylor 4/15, W. Jones 3/24).
