Quinella chance for Woodville sprinters

By

W. R. CARSTON

If Hassendean and Helen’s Joy come up with peak runs in the Blooms Plate Handicap at Motukarara tomorrow that will strengthen the prospect of a Central Districts quinella. Weight of North Island money alone will assure these two Woodville-trained sprinters of being on the short list of fancies for the first leg of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s T.A.B. double. Hassendean, one of a successful team prepared by Bruce Marsh, is top weight with 57kg, an assessment well earned as the result of seven victories last season. As a five-year-old he has failed to score in four starts but one of his peak runs would be adequate to enable him to cope with tomorrow’s opposition. Helen’s Joy, which Scott Hammersley prepares, has made good progress through

the lower grades this season. She was an all-the-way winner against the class two metric milers at Otaki early last month and in the meantime finished a respectable fourth against the open sprinters at Masterton. But the two northerners are unlikely to have things all their own way in tomorrow’s S9OOO feature. Canterbury trainers, in particular, will saddle their share of talented sprinters. Tirana, no worse than fifth in four starts this time up, Black Arrow, the best of Panther’s rivals but the subsequent winner after an inquiry into the sprint on the second day of the Grand National meeting, and Landofair and Dainty Dish, the best behind La Pomme and separated by only a nose in the sprint at Rangiora list Saturday, could all be heavily involved in the finish. Washdyke’s Johnny Alone, obviously on the way up again after two starts in a fresh campaign, must also come into reckoning. Royal Sceptre, a fast-fin-ishing third in the Lion Brown North Canterbury Cup at Rangiora last Monday, might be the one they all have to beat in the second leg, the Stevens Banks Peninsula Cup.

This will be the fourth race this time up for the Washdyke-trained Noble Bijou five-year-old and he should now be ready to reproduce his peak form, which is very good. Our Secret Weapon and Royal Adder will strengthen the possibility of a South Canterbury victory. The Orari-trained stablemates both have sound form close

up on their records. Unless Wingatui’s Noble Boa or his stablemate, Noble Jewel, come up with something better than they did last week-end, the former at Rangiora and Noble Jewel at Gore, hopes of a victory for Otago stables will re§t with Truaura, which made her best showing this time up when third at Wyndham last time out. If Rangiora form is going to prove valuable All Trebles looks sure to be involved in the finish. This consistent Three Legs five-year-old chased His Latest

home course last Monday and that was his second consecutive second this time up. Unless Rattle the Sabre or Samasaan can come up with something better than they have lately, the prospect of a Riccarton victory looks slim. , Giveaway, the lone northerner in the field, could be best of the others. This stablemate of Hassendean has a middle-distance victory in the lower grades and a last-start third in highweight company at Trentham on her recent record.
