CANTERBURY’S LEADING JET BOAT drivers will not have fond memories of the national rally, held at Lake Ratapiko, in Taranaki, last week-end. The highest placing achieved by a Canterbury competitor was Bruce Street’s eleventh of the 43 entrants. The rally consisted of 10 boating tasks and was held for the first time on a lake, rather than a river. Kelvin Frederickson, from Inglewood, was a comfortable winner of the C.W.F. Hamilton trophy, finishing first in three of the tasks. Sue Thorp, also from Taranaki, won the Lady Hamilton silver tray as best woman competitor. IT WAS NOT A DAY for batsmen when the first round of the Trusteebank Cup senior one-day cricket competition was played on Monday. Only three teams managed to reach 100, with 16 players failing to score, although three of those were not out. Top — or bottom — of the list was High School Old Boys, which contributed four "ducks” to the total, while Marist, Lancaster Park B and Park A had two batsmen scoreless. Some spectacular bowling analyses were recorded; indeed 101 of the 400.5 overs bowled were maidens. WITH PRIZES worth $6750 being offered the Businessworld United classic pairs bowls tournament is being a popular annual event. Entries close on Monday and already the event has attracted 196 pairs, enough to fill 12 greens. Last year’s inaugural tournament filled 14 greens. Part of the first prize will be a trip to Auckland to contest the MacLeay Duff invitation pairs run by the Manurewa club. The tournament, regarded as the biggest run by a club in New Zealand is scheduled for December 1,2 and 3. Headquarters will be the Barrington Bowling Club which is holding its sixtieth anniversary celebrations.
