In the black

Judy Phillips is under new colours once again in the B.N.Z. women’s senior tennis competition. She turned out for United on Labour Day, winning her singles against Barrington’s Vicki Ratana and combining successfully in doubles with her fellow hockey international, Shirley Haig. Previously a stalwart at No. 1 for Avonside, Miss Phillips switched to United when her former club lost its place in the senior grade. She played for United back in 1976-77, and has also

appeared for Shirley, North Linwood and Edgeware. The win achieved by Miss Phillips against Vicki Ratana put the experienced United player on the right side of the ledger as far as her personal singles record in the senior tennis competition is concerned. At the end of last season she had played 82 singles, for 41 wins and 41 losses. Now she is “in the black,” and seems set to win Canterbury selection for the Nunneley Casket defence for the eighth time.
