Auckland R.C.

Special correspondent Auckland

Balrani, overdue a win, should prove a worthy favourite for the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Ellerslie today. No success would be more deserved. The last time Balrani won was about 10 months ago, at Avondale. In eight starts meanwhile, he failed only once to weigh-in and that was in the Wellington Derby. His other seven attempts brought in a second placing, a third, three fourths, and two fifths, in the New Zealand Derby and the Wellington Stakes.

Only bad luck in the running kept Balrani from being closer than fourth at Pukekohe last Saturday, in a 1600 m highweight. The wonder was that, after being squeezed back in the inside with 800 m to run,

he finished so close. In a class 1 1600 m the time before, at Matamata — tomorrow’s Balmerino Handicap is class 2 — Balrani also finished fourth. His connections must be close to despairing of his ever winning again. If Balrani is again denied success it could be by Goodies or Gold Mary. Both mares, Goodies a seven-year-old, and Gold Mary six, are capable of winning whenever the opposition is a grade or two below the best. Goodies took this race last year, running on very solidly, as she does when in top form.

Back from a spell, Goodies finished third in a class 1 1600 m at Ellerslie on October 12, when she last raced, making up a huge amount of grouno in the last 400 m. Gold Mary finished only eleventh last time, in a class 2,

2100 m at Tauranga on October 8, but the run was right out of character as she had been racing consistently well. Barata, Sirex and Rich and Famous are others which might go close. Sirex and Rich and Famous were among the beaten lot at Pukekohe last Saturday, but neither had any luck.

Taking recent form as a guide, Quibble is the one to beat in the second leg, the Uncle Remus Handicap. She showed herself last season, when a four-year-old, to be smart and decidedly useful, and came right back into prominence with a last-start second placing at Paeroa on Monday. The return to racing, after a spell, of Trioak will be interesting. He has so often looked good, and Loizell, My Nam and Tango To have some claims.
