Duke acquitted of fraud
NZPA-PA London The Duke of Manchester was cleared at the Old Bailey yesterday of being part of a £38,000 swindle also concerning a stripper and a bank manager. The Duke, aged 45, was found not guilty of conspiring with others between October and December, 1982, to fraudulently obtain
the money as a loan from a bank manager by using forged American bonds as a security. It was alleged that he was part of a group who used the fact that the manager had spent a secret week-end with a 30-year-old stripper to force him to lend them money. But Angus Drogo Mon-
tague, who inherited his title in June while awaiting trial, denied throughout being party to any fraud.
His counsel, Peter Coni, Q.C., told the jury that the Duke was “gullible and a bit of an ass,” but there was nothing to suggest he had knowingly used the bond to fraudulently obtain money.
