Tests vital—France
NZPA-Reuter Mururoa The French Prime Minister, Mr Laurent Fabius, began a visit to France’s nuclear test site at Mururoa yesterday by declaring that the controversial experiments were vital to his country’s independence. Mr Fabius, who flew by Concorde supersonic jet to
the remote South Pacific atoll, was due to watch a nuclear test. He is accompanied by a French Parliamentary delegation. After inspecting a Foreign Legion guard of honour on his flag-waving visit, he said he had come to demonstrate that the tests had no harmful effects on the environment.
