Nine members of the Oki-nawa-Te Karate organisation in Christchurch will compete in the New Zealand Karate Federation national championships at Porirua today. The contingent includes Brendon Streaker, aged 13, a white belt.
All the members qualified for the nationals in the South Island championships, among them Guy Baldwin, a green belt, who won the black belt and first to third kyu divisions in kumite (fighting) and the under-18 kyu grade kata division. He is expected to figure prominently. The other team members are John Smith, Wayne Petersen, Jeon Flavell, Dean McKenzie, Martin Jenkins, Jennifer Penwell and Sophie Cross.
The Christchurch contingent is hoping to perform well as a New Zealand team will be picked after the tournament.
