Award talks adjourned

PA Wellington Award talks between journalists and their employers have been adjourned to November 9, the New Zealand Journalists’ Union general secretary, Mr Tony Wilton, has said. The employers sought the adjournment in order to consult newspaper publishers on a number of main points of dispute. The union agreed to the adjournment on the understanding that it would ballot its members.

The union had at first sought a pay increase of 25 per cent. “We have offered 16.4 per cent across the board,” said the Newspaper Publishers’ Association advocate, Mr Patrick Greene. “We believe that is an extremely significant offer that should not be disregarded.” Mr Wilton, the union advocate, said a main issue, although not the only one, was exemption from union membership of New Zea-

land Press Association duty editors. Mr Greene confirmed: “The key issue that appears to be blocking agreement is exemption of duty editors at the Press Association. “The union has a claim for removal of all existing award exemptions bar the editor. The issue has far wider implications than the Press Association. “The .employers have a counter-claim for exemption of Press Association duty editors,” he said.
