The judges will consider the following in assessing the articles: • USEFULNESS OF, OR INTEREST IN, THE SUBJECT. • READABILITY OF TEXT. • EVIDENCE OF RESEARCH AND INQUIRY. • SUITABILITY FOR GENERAL NEWSPAPER READERSHIP, EVEN IF ON A SPECIALISED SUBJECT. • SUITABILITY OF MATERIAL FOR PUBLICATION SOME WEEKS AFTER PREPARATION. ARTICLES MUST BE ORIGINAL AND UNPUBLISHED, AND NOT EXCEED 1200 WORDS. Only one article may be submitted by each entrant and should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only. The script should bear a pen-name (for judging purposes), and a signed, covering letter should include the pen-name, name and address of the writer, and a stamped-addressed envelope for return of article. Your entry should be accompanied by a fee of $2 to cover the expense of judging and administration by the association; and posted to reach the South Island Writers Association, P.O. Sox 1270, Christchurch, before November 11,1985. Subject to the wish of "The Press" to give first publication to the four leading entries, all rights for publication remain with the writers. Any New Zealand resident, other than a full-time newspaper or magazine journalist, may enter the competition. The results of the competition will be announced at a meeting of the South Island Writers' Association on December 11, 1985, and reported in "The Press" the next day.
