Farewell to Elizabeth
Sir,—l am sure very few citizens of Christchurch have not been saddened by the sudden death of Elizabeth, the elephant seal. That she became a legend not only here but much further afield must now pass into history. Her love of human company gave thousands of admirers memories that will no doubt be recalled for decades. I would like to pay a tribute to the public of Christchurch who kept her safe from interference over the years, to the traffic officers who showed great patience as she took up her favoured position in the middle of the road, but most of all to the men of the fisheries division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries who showed forbearance and understanding when her antics called for her to be shifted. These men kept a constant watch on her movements and often this meant visits in the middle of the night. It is through their efforts alone that Elizabeth’s stay with us proved to be such a rewarding one. I say, thank you men, a job well done. — Yours, etc., B. NORRIS. October 24, 1985.
