Wage claims

Sir,—The excessive wage demands by some of our unions will drastically destabilise our economy. Inflation and unemployment will soar. Also, we will be priced out of some of our overseas markets. Mr Prebble said on television that if inflation was not under control “the whole of New Zealand’s economy is in deep trouble.” Our country is like an insolvent business; to survive, overheads must be cut and trade increased. Only a period of selfimposed austerity will save us. The present unprecedented high level of wage demands, if allowed, will be disastrous. — Yours, etc., A. DELHANTY. October 12, 1985.
