Farmers’ incomes
Sir,—l had occasion to peruse some farm accounts recently and the prices compared with the expected schedule prices for the 198586 season made interesting reading. The accounts covered the years ended June 30, 1973, 1974, 1976 and 1977. The average prices received for lambs and ewes were: 1973, lambs ?8.37, ewes 55.68; 1974, lambs 510.91, ewes 57.46; 1976, lambs $9.67, ewes $6.62; 1977, lambs $13.40, ewes $10.78. The plight of the sheepfarmer some 13 years later becomes very evident when one considers the expected maximum schedule prices of $l4 for lambs and $4 for ewes for the current season. Add to this the significant increase in costs over the same period and it does not take much ingenuity to realise the consequent effect on the total economy. — Yours, etc.,
G. W. EASTWICK. Broadfield, October 9, 1985.
