Everest attempt thwarted

A New Zealand expedition’s attempt to climb Mount Everest has been thwarted by avalanche conditions. Although fit and physcially capable of the climb, the 12 mountaineers have been forced to abandon their bid to scale the summit of Mount Everest because of avalanche dangers. A Christchurch member of the team, Mr Mike Perry, telephoned home last evening with news that the team had arrived in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. The team expects to return to New Zealand about October 25, as planned. Two other members of the New Zealand Alpine Club expedition returned to New Zealand last week, one of them with frostbitten fingers. , , - ~
