Tourist on drug charges

NZPA-AAP Jakarta A New Zealand tourist, David Crooks, of Dunedin, was charged on Thursday with narcotics trafficking on the resort island of Bali, the New Zealand Embassy said last week.

Crooks, aged 36, was remanded the District

Court at Denpasar for allegedly trying to sell 368 grams of hashish at Legian Beach. He is the second New Zealander recently charged with trafficking. Keri Stevenson, aged 23, of Te Puke, is awaiting trial for allegedly trying to sell hashish.

Australia’s Consul in Bali, Mr Ray Gardiner, said 12 Australians were on remand or serving sentences on narcotics charges in Bali, Prosecutors had begun demanding heavier sentences than usual to counter Bali’s image of a drug haven for young Westerners, he told AAP.
