Game win by Star Lady

The Colin de Filippitrained Star Lady, driven by Ricky Alfeld, was handily placed throughout the Gallery Interiors, Ltd, Handicap, the second leg of the main double at Motukara on Saturday. She responded gamely to win by a head from Gold and Black, with narrow margins to Vicki McQuade and Spangled Lord.

Gold and Black broke just short of the post and following an inquiry she was relegated to fourth, with Vicki

McQuade and Spangled Lord being promoted to second and third respectively. The surprise firm favourite, Regal Nugent, broke at the start. She improved sharply inside the last 1200 m, and was with the leaders 200 m out. She could not carry on and finished tenth. A barrier strand caught around her legs at the start, causing her to break.

Nat, another well-sup-ported runner, lost his

chance at the start and finished thirteenth. Karlsruhe, having his first start, led for the last 2200 m of the Dave Peters Handicap. He has been trained for only six weeks by Terry McMillan at Leeston and is a brother to a top trotter, Basil Dean. Karlsruhe, a seven-year-old, has been tried by other trainers in both the North Island and Canterbury, but he is not a good-gaited horse. “He has hit himself badly for a long time, but is

improving a bit. He’s a really a brave horse and never stops trying in spite of the effects of the knocks he’s given himself,” said McMillan. Gunther, another to have had a change of trainer lately, broke through for an overdue win in the New Brighton Panelbeaters’ Handicap. He is now being prepared by Colin de Filippi, who should not find him hard to place to advantage in the near future.
