Fireworks campaigner honoured
NZPA staff correspondent London A memorial to the New Zealand fireworks campaigner, Beverley Pentland, has been launched in London with the tribute: “She was a giant among campaigners. She must be remembered. She won’t be forgotten in New Zealand and we will keep up her memory here.”
Mrs Pentland was a Petone woman who fought and won a long battle in New Zealand to change the
law and put in place controls on fireworks safety. She died of cancer. Britain’s National Campaign for Firework Reform, which unlike Mrs Pentland has not been able to persuade Parliamentarians to adopt new laws, has announced an award to encourage better standards. It is named the Beverley Pentland Firework Safety Certificate of Merit Award and will go to community groups and schools who stage well-organised displays.
