Pre-marathon form shown by O’Connor

Mary O’Connor (University) won the New Zealand road running championship over 10km in Wellington on Saturday, in her final workout in this country before flying to the United States today to prepare for the Chicago marathon on Sunday. In typical O’Connor fashion she led from the start and beat a talented field to record a time of 34 minutes 15 seconds. O’Connor has been in excellent form in Canterbury, winning the provincial title and setting a lap record in the New Zealand road relay championships. Another international, Sue Bruce (Bascik New Brighton) wound up a fast finish to come third in 34:52.

In the men’s 16km championship the Canterbury champion, Chris Tobin, could manage only ninth place, but the runner-up in the Canterbury championships for the last two years, Don Greig (Bascik New Brighton) ran well for fourth, ahead of the New Zealand marathon representative, Derek Froude (Wellington). Kerry Faas (Avon) won the junior men’s title over 101 cm, beating a line-up which included the national junior cross country champion, Ross Moore. Caroline. Barrie, the Canterbury under 16 champion, finished a brilliant second in the junior women’s (under 18) championship, beating the talented Tracey Kennedy (Southland) by three seconds.
