The other experts...
While watching this year’s “Mastermind” finalists on One tomorrow evening, spare a thought for the researcher and 44 experts who spent many hours preparing the questions. “Surprisingly enough, although each series covers a minimum of 32 specialist topics, often with the most extraordinary topics nominated, we've found that where there is an enthusiast there is always an expert,” says the producer, Max Cryer. George Orwell, New Zealand trotting, Rudyard Kipling and Queen Mary are the contestants’ self-chosen topics featured in this year’s final and thankfully, says Cryer, although diverse, they are not obscure. Cryer approached TVNZ’s sports department to put him in contact with an expert on New Zealand trotting and the English department at Auckland Univer-, sity nominated experts on George Orwell and Rudyard Kipling. “The only tricky one was the life and times of Queen Mary.” Fortunately Cryer was able to track down a librarian who had a particular interest in the subject and also had access to detailed information.
