Shipping news Dispute end likely
The Pacifica Shipping' Company’s new ship Spirit of Competition will probably resume service this week-end after being held up at Lyttelton yesterday by an Industrial dispute. A company spokesman said yesterday it was “probable” that agreement would be reached with the Harbour Board Employees’ Union and the ship would sail either today or tomorrow. The Spirit of Competition was to have sailed to Wellington yesterday. The voyage was cancelled because of a dispute between the union and the Lyttelton Harbour Board over Pacifica’s cargo working area. Stevedores had unloaded the ship’s cargo on Thursday on to an area, beside the No. 7 wharf, which was not designated a loading area in the board’s agreement with waterslders.
The Pacifica spokesman said the union had expected to be consulted if the area was going to be used. He expected to arrange to have the cargo shifted, and for the union to resume working the ship.
