Incentives for teachers to take rural posts
Wellington reporter Measures to encourage teachers to move into rural schools with staffing difficulties have been outlined by the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall. He was answering questions in Parliament by Miss Ruth Richardson (Nat., Selwyn). Teachers in most of these schools were eligible for a staffing incentives allowance of $648 a year and the payment of removal expenses. Schools in which teachers were not eligible for the
staffing incentives allowance could ask that special vacancies be tagged to entitle the appointee to claim removal expenses when taking up the position, Mr Marshall said. An allowance was also payable to teachers as members of the State Services in areas designated “isolated” to compensate for living in isolated localities. As well, a re-recruitment campaign was under way to encourage former teachers to return to teaching, he said. The initial response to this campaign had been favourable, ana included many
teachers in rural areas willing to return to teaching either permanently, or on a relieving or part-time basis.
