Tramways Union supported
PA Wellington Wellington City Council bus drivers and transport staff voted on Thursday to support a national campaign by Tramways Union members for a $32 a week industry allowance. The claim was based on the loss in the value of wages since the election of the Labour Government last year, said the acting President of the national union, Mr Henry Stubbs, yesterday. The Wellington meeting, attended by more than 200, voted by secret ballot to support the national executive in any action in support of the claim.
Action by the union is expected to be several weeks away, but it is arguing to obtain the allowance by Christmas. 1 Meetings of Tramways Union members would be held throughout New Zealand and the claim had to be lodged with employers and a response received, Mr Stubbs said. Auckland would not be affected. Drivers’ wages had fallen in value 26.5 per cent since the beginning of the wage freeze. Since the election of the Government they had fallen 12.6 per cent, said Mr Stubbs.
