Physicians win Nobel Prize
NZPA-Reuter Oslo International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, informally known as Doctors Against Nuclear War, have won the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. The politically independent group was awarded the prize for its “considerable service to mankind by spreading authoritative information and by creating an awareness of the catastrophic consequences of atomic warfare,” the Nobel committee announced yesterday. There were a record 99 nominees but no clear favourite for this year’s award. Sources dose to the committee indicated earlier that the New Zealand Prime Minister, Mr Lange, was firming as a likely contender. They dismissed reports that the Irish rock singer, Bob Geldof, might receive the 1985' prize for organising the Live Aid pop concerts for famine relief in Africa. His nomination was apparently received too late.
