Walkway network 1000 km
Wellington reporter There are now 118 walks, tracks, and routes in the walkway network, which totals more than 1000 km, according to the annual report of the Lands and Survey Department tabled in Parliament.
A new track is being devised for use by people in wheelchairs. This is the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walk in the Coromandel Ranges, which includes an abandoned railway tunnel.
The Walkways Commission has decided that there will be a period of consolidation, with more funds being spent on maintenance rather than on capital works for new development.
