Wage claims
Sir,—How can Mr Douglas have the cheek to plead for pay moderation when the massive increase decided upon by the Higher Salaries Commission gives him an increase in salary greater than my wage? Judging from the number of luxury cars imported, yachts on our harbours, private holiday homes in prime locations, etc., etc., the salaries of upper class people are sufficient already. The wageearner does not want an increase to update his luxuiy living style. He wants to meet increased food, mortgage, power bills, etc. He has already given up any idea of having an away-from-home vacation. It may be exciting for the yachting community to see Lion New Zealand doing well, but I wonder what the brewery worker thinks of the profits from his labour being used in this venture. Mr Douglas had better be aware. The wage and salary earners are fed up.—Yours, etc., L. H. JONES. October 7, 1985.
