Mr Lange tips Geldof
PA Wellington Bob Geldof, the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats, is the pick of the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, to win the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize.
Mr Lange was nominated for the prize by a Swedish peace group earlier this year. The announcement of the winner will be made from Sweden this week-end. Asked yesterday how he viewed his chances, Mr Lange said he did not regard himself as a recipient for the award. “I would have thought if
you talk about individual people the Irishman, Bob Geldof, would be a monty,” Mr Lange said. “I would certainly feel no sense of loss at all.”
Geldof organised the Live Aid televised concerts for African famine relief, and masterminded the record, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” which sparked a similar fund-raising effort from American musicians. Mr Lange said that he did not consider his nomination for the prize added weight to New Zealand’s antinuclear policy.
