Man’s actions help police

PA Auckland A quick-thinking man gave the police valuable leads after an armed holdup by three masked men at an Auckland post office yesterday. A company executive, Mr Gilbert Wong of Mangere, was about to walk into the Landscape Post Office when he heard a woman teller inside screaming: “They’re coming in; they’re coming in.” He turned and saw three men in balaclavas, one wielding a shotgun, rushing towards the post office door.

“I made a bee-line for the

nearest telephone,” said Mr Wong. Pausing to note the number of the getaway car, he dashed into a womenswear shop next door and asked the manageress to telephone the police.

Meanwhile the robbers in the post office were threatening two women tellers with the shotgun. They fled with a sum believed to be about 53000.

The women, although shaken, were unharmed. Detective Sergeant Phil Parsons commended Mr Wong’s actions which, he said, helped police recover the getaway vehicle and isolate the area where the robbers escaped.
