Banks deny first mortgage claim
PA Auckland Trading banks yesterday rejected an assertion by the Opposition finance spokesman, Mr Birch, that they were offering first mortgages at 23 per cent. Most trading bank first mortgages for homes are at
18 per cent or 18.5 per cent, bankers said. The National Bank has held its rate for most supportive customers at 17.5 per cent, though the most common private mortgage rate from the bank is 18 per cent.
