U.S., Aust, unbeatable
NZPA-Reuter Nagoya, Japan The United States and Australia, seeded second and third, took unbeatable 2-0 leads in their opening matches here yesterday to advance to the second round of the Federation Cup women’s team tennis competition. They join top-seeded Czechoslovakia, who opened their bid to retain the Cup by defeating Greece on Monday. The Americans’ victory over South Korea began with Zina Garrison’s demolition of Seol Min-gyeong.
Garrison, ranked sixth in the world, crushed the inexperienced Seol, 6-0, 6-0, in only 39 minutes. In the other singles, Kathy Jordan’s strong serve-and-volley game carried her to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Kim Soo-ok. The Australians, playing Denmark, also went through to the second round on the strength of singles victories from Anne Minter and Wendy Turnbull, though Turnbull, ranked twelfth in the world, had to struggle to beat Tine Scheuer-Larsen. Minter had a straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, victory over Anne Moeller.
