Ambassador in hospital

New Zealand’s ambassador in Tokyo, Mr Roger Peren, has been admitted to hospital. Mr Peren was taken from the embassy on a stretcher late yesterday afternoon, said the Tokyo correspondent of “The Press,” Bruce Roscoe, last evening. Mr Peren was conscious at the time. When approached, the embassy declined to comment on his condition. Mr Peren took up his position about the middle of last year.

Now aged 59, Mr Peren joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1947 after graduating from Victoria University, Wellington, and doing post-graduate studies at Oxford University. He has served in Washington, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, New Delhi, Singapore, Jakarta, and Moscow. He is married and has two children.

The embassy said later that Mr Peren had suffered “a seizure” and that he was undergoing tests in hospital. Early tests had been “encouraging.”
