Methven crowded
The loss of the Ranfurly Shield by Canterbury a week earlier was attributed as being the main reason for the highly successful meeting held by the Methven Trotting Club on Saturday. A crowd, well in excess of 5000, was considered by officials to be one of the biggest to date to pack the course. It was so large that parking areas were filled
early in the day and latecomers had to park outside the course. The totalisator was not geared to handle such a crowd and many were shut out early in the day. On-course betting reached a record $371,856, an increase of $75,080 on the previous year, while the off-course total of $696,546, was up by $156,199 over 1984.
