AUSTRALIA Bulls seek the best

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer yesterday, boosted by shortage of scrip and strong demand for high quality stocks, brokers said. They said underlying sentiment took a bullish twist late last week and the firmer trend, started by Elders and Coles, extended across the boards yesterday. CSR led the market advance in the morning session, adding 15c to 320 on speculation that it had completed the sale of half of its stake in Delhi, but CSR representatives said no decision had been made. BHP rose 8c to 716 and CRA 12c to 562 c. Gold stocks were mixed, with Central Norseman firming 16c to 930, Renison 6c to 566 and GMK 10c to 1170, while Kidston fell 10c to 550, Poseidon 10c to 430 and Sons of Gwalia 8c to 312. On industrial fronts, Elders rose 20c to 335 on the back of its planned $3.4 billion bid for the United Kingdom brewer, Allied Lyons. Bell Group gained 50c to 900 on speculation that Robert Holmes a Court is poised for some corporate play, .but analysts were reluctant to guess what that move may be. Elsewhere, Coles firmed 7c to 442, FAI 20c to 1670, Myer even to 367 and lEL 10c to 710.
