Religious men attract many

NZPA-AP Vorona, Rumania An estimated 30,000 Rumanians, one of the largest crowds at a religious service in the Communist State, gathered in the around a Vorona monastery yesterday to hear the American evangelist, the Rev. Billy Graham. “I am highly honoured that the State and the church co-operated in having us here today,” Mr Graham said.

Religion, especially among baptists, is thriving in many parts of Rumania even though the State is officially atheist.

In Lhasa a dense and fervent crowd of more than 10,000 Tibetans flocked to the Jokhang temple yesterday for a rare blessing by the Bainqen Lama, Tibet’s second-ranking Buddhist priest. It was only the second visit here in 20 years by the Bainqen Lama. After an abortive 1959 Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule he was made to live in Peking, where he has co-operated closely with the authorities. The Dalai Lama, the Tibetans’ spiritual leader, fled in 1959 to India and has never been back.
