Early shake-up by Howard
NZPA-AAP Canberra The Australian Opposition Leader, Mr John Howard, has signalled a dramatic shift to the Right in his Party’s ideological and economic direction with a substantially reshuffled shadow ministry which includes seven new faces. Jim Carlton, the former New South Wales party secretary, and Health Minister, who was dropped from the executive by Andrew Peacock last year, has been reappointed to the front bench as shadow Treasurer.
John Spender, also from N.S.W., who rushed back from New York to support Mr Howard at last week’s extraordinary party meet-
ing which resulted in Mr Peacock's shock resignation and Mr Howard's election as leader, becomes shadow Attorney-General. The party’s new deputy, Neil Brown, given a choice of portfolios, opted for the position of Employment and Industrial relations spokesman; a crucial area given Mr Howard’s hard-line stance on labour deregulation.
Mr Peacock is the new Opposition spokesman on Foreign Affairs while his predecessor, the intellectually moderate lan Macphee who was dropped from Industrial Relations last year, is further demoted to Communications.
