New local body officer ceilings
The Christchurch City Manager, Mr John Gray, is entitled to one of the biggest pay packets in local Government, according to the Higher Salaries Commission.
Mr Gray now earns $57,311 gross a year but the commission has established a new upper limit of $69,000 in its 1985 review, equalled in Auckland and topped only by Wellington at $75,000. Should Mr Gray’s salary be raised to the maximum allowable, he will receive a 20.3 per cent rise backdated to April 1, this year. The new salary ceiling for the chief administrative officer in each local authority in the upper South Island

For harbour boards, the ceilings for the general managers, chief engineer, and the harbourmaster, respectively, are: Lyttelton, $60,000, $53,500, $48,500; Marlborough, $45,000, —, $39,500; Nelson, $50,000, -, $44,000; Timaru, $47,500, $43,500, $41,000.
