Many Christchurch clerical workers did not bother to vote on the issue of compulsory union membership when voting began yesterday. The clerical workers are the first to have a chance to vote on the issue, but the secretary of the
Canterbury Clerical Workers’ Union, Mr Leon Morel, said yesterday that the turnout at the three meetings during the day was disappointing. Another meeting for the ballot was held in the Trade Union Centre last evening.
The only other chance for Christchurch clerks to vote will be at Queen Elizabeth II Park stadium today at 9 a.m. Mr Morel said that he hoped the attendance today and at the meetings in Timaru, Rangiora, and Ashburton would be better.
