The deep yellow flowers of Mahonia lomariifolia are carried in very prominent racemes of up to 30cm in length during the winter, adding a bit of life and colour to the garden scene at a time when it is usually
most needed. The blue-black berries, covered in grey bloom, are equally conspicuous, flanked by rigid, spiny 'pinnate leaves. This is a hardy, somewhat stiff-look-ing shrub which will grow in the sun or shade.
